- GEO versus SEO

# GEO and SEO compared

## Same groundwork, two goals.

The question comes up in every first call. Briefly: GEO does not replace SEO, it builds on it and measures something else.

Common ground

## Why one does not work without the other.

Generative systems draw on the same web as search engines. A page that is technically unreachable appears in no answer. In that sense good SEO is the precondition rather than the alternative.

Much overlaps in substance too: clear structure, understandable language, evidenced claims, clean internal linking. Doing that for search engines does it for answer systems as well.

The practical advice is unglamorous: anyone who has neglected SEO should not start with GEO but with the groundwork.

Difference

## Where the paths separate.

**The output.** SEO aims at a position in a list a person chooses from. GEO aims at a mention inside a text where the choosing has already happened.

**The measurement.** SEO measures position, visibility and clicks. GEO measures whether you appear in answers, in how many and through which source. Reporting both is possible, blending them is not.

**The lever outside.** With SEO much of the work sits on your own domain. With GEO a large part sits outside, because claims about you weigh more when they do not come from you.

**The speed.** SEO effects are often observable over weeks. In chatbots some things move faster, because material is retrieved live, and others considerably slower, because they hang on model knowledge.

Decision aid

## What first.

### No SEO in place

Groundwork first: reachability, structure, content. Without those no GEO measure works.

### SEO runs, clicks fall

Then [AI SEO](https://www.agenticsearch.at/en/knowledge/ai-seo/) is the entry. It is about your existing estate rather than a new programme.

### SEO runs, chatbots ignore you

Then [GEO](https://www.agenticsearch.at/en/knowledge/generative-engine-optimization/) is the topic, and the lever usually sits outside your domain.

Common questions

## About the comparison.

**Does GEO replace classic SEO?**

No. Generative systems draw on the same web. Without technical reachability and usable content a page appears in neither world.

**Can we simply shift the budget?**

Rarely sensible. A large part of the work pays into both. What comes on top is measurement and source work, which is an addition rather than a shift.

**Which metric do we report to management?**

Both side by side: organic visibility as before and the share of answers you appear in. A single combined figure would be false precision.

**What about rankings we have held for years?**

They stay for now. What can change is what they bring in. So watch clicks per position alongside the position itself.

**Does GEO need different content?**

Partly a different form, rarely different topics. Mostly it is about writing existing claims so they can be lifted out.

**Does the difference apply locally too?**

Yes, and particularly there. For queries with a local element both worlds lean heavily on map and directory data, but the output differs.

**Which takes effect faster?**

It depends. A corrected opening time often shows in answers within days, a new ranking takes weeks. Conversely model knowledge takes months.

**Can one agency do both?**

If it measures both, yes. The warning signs are known: anyone selling GEO and showing rankings as the result has missed the difference.

**Do we lose traffic by doing nothing?**

Possibly, depending on your share of informational queries. Whether it hits you shows in your own data rather than in a study about other sites.

**Where is the comparison of all four terms?**

In the [boundaries article](https://www.agenticsearch.at/en/knowledge/geo-aeo-llmo-ai-seo/), which places GEO, AEO, LLMO and AI SEO side by side.
