Answer first
The core statement sits in the first sentence. Anything opening with a run-up becomes useless once lifted.
AEO works on paragraphs rather than pages. One question, one answer, liftable and understandable without context. The offer sits on the service page.
Definition
Answer engine optimisation describes optimising individual question and answer pairs for systems that return an answer rather than a results list. Target formats are answer boxes in search, short replies from voice assistants and the quoted paragraphs in chatbots.
The term predates GEO and comes from the era of featured snippets. It gained weight with generative systems, because the same principle applies: a paragraph gets lifted out and passed on.
So the unit of work is the passage rather than the page. A good page can hold many, and a weak page with one good passage can still get quoted.
Anatomy
The core statement sits in the first sentence. Anything opening with a run-up becomes useless once lifted.
Not “we offer” but the name. A passage without a subject cannot be attributed to anyone.
Roughly forty to eighty words for the core. Longer gets cut, and then the system does the cutting.
Understandable without the page around it, including caveats. A “see above” makes the passage worthless.
Practice
From four sources. First search data, showing what gets typed. Second sales, hearing what gets asked. Third support, knowing what stays unclear afterwards.
The fourth is usually overlooked: the follow-up questions chatbots ask themselves. When a system asks back, it is missing something for the answer. That gap is a task.
What does not help is a list of thirty questions nobody asks. Twenty shallow answers on one page produce twenty weak passages and not a single quotable one.
