AI search and how it works

Searching without getting a list.

AI search is the umbrella term for systems that answer a question in prose instead of returning a list of results. This page explains how they go about it.

Definition

What the term covers.

AI search means search processes where a language model sits between question and answer and writes the result itself. The term covers several designs that look similar from outside and work differently inside.

The first design is a classic search engine with an answer placed on top, such as AI Overviews at Google. The index stays the same, a summary sits above it.

The second is a chatbot with web access. It rewrites the question, fetches several sources and writes an answer from them. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity work this way.

The third is a conversational mode inside a search engine, such as Google AI Mode. It combines both: search index in the background, conversation in front.

Differences

What changes against a list of results.

  • Fewer places

A list has ten positions, an answer two to four sources. The distribution gets harsher.

  • Different language

People type keywords into a search engine and write full sentences to a chatbot.

  • Several steps

One question becomes several queries. What you asked is rarely what got searched.

  • No trail

No click means no measurement in your own analytics. What happens inside an answer is visible only if you ask yourself.

Position

What we do not claim.

Wildly different figures circulate on market share and usage. We adopt none of them, because they differ by orders of magnitude depending on definition and method.

What can be said instead: whether your audience searches this way is a question for your audience and not for a study. The fastest way to answer it is to put questions from your own business into several systems and see who gets named.

We also do not claim that classic search disappears. Both forms exist alongside each other, and many queries with buying intent still run through lists of results.

Common questions

About AI search.

Which systems count as AI search?
Chatbots with web access such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, search engines with an answer on top such as Google with AI Overviews, and conversational modes such as Google AI Mode.
Is Perplexity a search engine or a chatbot?
It is both at once, which makes it a good illustration of the term. It searches like a search engine and answers like a chatbot, with visible source citations.
Why do I get different answers to the same question?
Because these systems are not deterministic and because they fetch live. That is why every question gets measured repeatedly instead of turning one query into a statement.
Do I see AI search in my analytics?
Only the part that leads to a click, and even that incompletely, because referrals get labelled inconsistently. The rest stays invisible unless you measure it yourself.
Does the wording of questions change?
Considerably. Queries to chatbots are longer, carry conditions and often a reason. That is exactly why the work runs on question sets rather than keywords.
Do older audiences use AI search too?
We have no solid data of our own on that and adopt none from elsewhere. What counts is your audience, and a measurement settles it.
What happens with advertising in these systems?
The providers are building ad space. What is available today sits on the page about ChatGPT Ads, with a date on it.
Can I block my website from AI search?
Yes, through robots.txt per provider. Whether that helps depends on your goal. Anyone who wants to be found is locking themselves out.
Does classic search engine optimisation still count?
Yes, it is the groundwork. The index generative answers draw on is the same one. The comparison sits under GEO versus SEO.
How do I check this for my company?
Put one question from your business into three systems and see who gets named. Systematically, that runs as an audit.
