Generative engine optimisation explained

When the answer replaces the choosing.

GEO is the work of getting a system that writes its own answer to name and link your brand inside it. This page explains the subject. The offer sits on the service page.

Definition

What the term describes.

Generative engine optimisation describes measures intended to get a brand, product or claim named and linked as a source inside an answer produced by an AI system. The term appeared around 2023 in contrast to classic search engine optimisation.

The difference sits in the output. SEO works towards a results list a person chooses from. GEO works towards a finished paragraph naming two to four sources, where the choosing has already happened.

That makes the distribution harsher. Position six in a list still earns clicks. In an answer naming three, there is no fourth place.

Factors

What observably matters.

Observable here means: recurring in measurements, not confirmed by the providers.

  • Fetchability

The page has to be readable without script execution and reachable for the providers' crawlers. Lose that and you lose everything.

  • Quotable passages

Statements that can be lifted out and work without context. Anything that only makes sense in situ rarely gets used.

  • Agreement

Details that match other independent sources. Contradictions mean a different version wins.

  • External sources

Mentions outside your own domain. A claim about you weighs more when it does not come from you.

  • Structure

Structured data and a clear heading outline ease the assignment. They are a precondition rather than a lever.

  • Currency

Outdated details get passed on. For opening hours, prices and availability, maintenance beats phrasing.

Limits

What nobody knows.

The providers do not disclose how they select and weight sources. Everything written about GEO rests on observation rather than documentation. Anyone presenting it otherwise is overstating.

Observations also age quickly. A pattern that held in spring can vanish after a model change. So you measure repeatedly with a frozen question set rather than checking once and turning it into a rule.

What proves stable in our measurements is unglamorous: reachable pages, clear statements, consistent facts, independent mentions. That is not secret knowledge, it is craft under new conditions.

Common questions

About GEO as a term.

What does the abbreviation GEO stand for?
Generative engine optimisation. It has nothing to do with geography, which occasionally causes confusion, particularly alongside location terms.
How long has the term existed?
It spread from 2023, alongside the arrival of generative search surfaces. The work behind it is in parts considerably older.
Who coined the term?
It came out of academic and practitioner circles at once and has no single origin we could evidence. So we name none here.
Is GEO a ranking factor topic?
Not in the classic sense. There is no published factor list and no position to optimise towards. There are observations about what appears in answers more often.
Does text length matter?
Barely. What matters is whether a question is answered clearly in a few sentences. Long texts help when they answer many questions, not because they are long.
Does it help to label content for AI?
There is no recognised markup for saying a text is meant for AI, and it would not be a useful signal. Structured data helps with assignment, nothing more.
What about keyword density?
It plays no part. Generative systems work on meaning rather than word counts. A text repeating one word conspicuously reads as unnatural.
Can you measure GEO without being a client?
Yes, in principle with any chatbot. Ask a question from your business and see who gets named. That is not statistics, but it shows the principle.
How does GEO differ from AEO?
GEO looks at the whole answer field, AEO at the individual question. The detailed comparison sits in the boundaries article.
Does every company need GEO?
No. Where buying decisions happen without research, the benefit is small. That covers many local everyday businesses and impulse purchases.
What is the most common mistake?
Believing it is a copy problem. In most cases either technical fetchability is missing or there are no mentions outside the company's own domain.
Where do I read on?
At AI visibility for measurement, at metrics for assessment, and in the Agentic Search article for the wider frame.
