No SEO in place
Groundwork first: reachability, structure, content. Without those no GEO measure works.
The question comes up in every first call. Briefly: GEO does not replace SEO, it builds on it and measures something else.
Common ground
Generative systems draw on the same web as search engines. A page that is technically unreachable appears in no answer. In that sense good SEO is the precondition rather than the alternative.
Much overlaps in substance too: clear structure, understandable language, evidenced claims, clean internal linking. Doing that for search engines does it for answer systems as well.
The practical advice is unglamorous: anyone who has neglected SEO should not start with GEO but with the groundwork.
Difference
The output. SEO aims at a position in a list a person chooses from. GEO aims at a mention inside a text where the choosing has already happened.
The measurement. SEO measures position, visibility and clicks. GEO measures whether you appear in answers, in how many and through which source. Reporting both is possible, blending them is not.
The lever outside. With SEO much of the work sits on your own domain. With GEO a large part sits outside, because claims about you weigh more when they do not come from you.
The speed. SEO effects are often observable over weeks. In chatbots some things move faster, because material is retrieved live, and others considerably slower, because they hang on model knowledge.
Decision aid
Groundwork first: reachability, structure, content. Without those no GEO measure works.
Then AI SEO is the entry. It is about your existing estate rather than a new programme.
Then GEO is the topic, and the lever usually sits outside your domain.
